Why We Are Here

It's all too easy to dismiss domestic violence and abuse as a big city problem, and think it doesn't exist here in Southeast Idaho. Unfortunately, it does exist, and it is growing at an alarming rate.

In Idaho from 1999-2000

  • Sexual assault and rape increased 39.3%
  • Physical abuse increased 131.6%
  • Physical abuse occurred in more than 5% of homes
  • Incidents of physical harm to children more than doubled, affecting 12.1 children per 1000 households
  • Neglect increased 24.6%, affecting 8/1 children per 1000 households
  • Stalking/harassment increased 94.6%
  • It is estimated that less than 15% of domestic violence, and less than 45% of neglect/ physical abuse were reported to police
  • "The likelihood of being a victim of domestic violence is greatest in Bannock County." (Idaho Crime Victimization Survey, 2000)
